Kathryn McLay, CEO of Walmart International, recently announced that quick commerce now constitutes 20% of India’s e-commerce sector and is experiencing a robust annual growth rate of 50%. Speaking at the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference, McLay emphasized Walmart’s strategic focus on expanding in the quick commerce space, leveraging its Indian subsidiary, Flipkart.

This growth aligns with broader industry trends. A report by Bain & Company and Flipkart indicates that quick commerce platforms accounted for over two-thirds of all e-retail orders in India in 2024, with the market growing approximately fivefold to $6–7 billion since 2022. The sector is projected to grow over 40% annually until 2030, driven by expansion across new categories, geographies, and consumer segments.

Despite the rapid growth, some industry experts express concerns about the sustainability of the quick commerce boom. Gopal Srinivasan, Chairman of TVS Capital Funds, referred to the quick commerce surge as a “passing fad,” citing its heavy reliance on private equity and venture capital funding and questioning its long-term economic viability.

Nevertheless, Walmart’s commitment to quick commerce through Flipkart underscores its intent to capture growth in India’s evolving e-commerce landscape.
