At a recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting, Pakistan faced significant criticism for its role in escalating tensions with India, particularly following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

On April 22, 2025, an attack in Pahalgam resulted in the deaths of 26 Hindu tourists. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militants, citing evidence of Pakistani nationals among the assailants. In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, conducting missile strikes targeting what it described as terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. These strikes reportedly resulted in civilian casualties, including women and children, and damage to mosques and clinics .

Pakistan condemned the strikes as unprovoked aggression and vowed retaliation, claiming to have shot down Indian jets and targeting Indian military installations in response . The escalating conflict has raised international concerns, with the UN, US, and China urging both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue .

During the UNSC meeting, India strongly rebuked Pakistan’s attempts to internationalize the Kashmir issue. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, labeled Pakistan as the “global epicenter of terrorism,” accusing it of harboring over 20 UN-designated terrorist entities and providing state support to cross-border terrorism . Harish also highlighted the plight of minority women in Pakistan, citing reports of abductions and forced conversions among Hindu, Sikh, and Christian communities .

The UNSC has called for both India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and engage in dialogue to prevent further deterioration of the situation. However, with both nations taking retaliatory actions and suspending diplomatic ties, the path to resolution remains uncertain .
