TWO GET 1 YEAR JAIL FOR ASSAULTING ON- DUTY POLICE OFFICER IN 16.

A Mumbai court has sentenced a father-son duo, Rudrapal Agrawal (60) and his son Tushar (29), to one year of simple imprisonment for assaulting on-duty police officers. The incident occurred on May 15, 2018, when police responded to a distress call at the Agrawals’ residence in Kemps Corner, south Mumbai. Upon arrival, officers attempted to mediate a family dispute but were met with hostility; Tushar slapped Sub-inspector Vinod Kamble, and both verbally abused and assaulted the officers. The court highlighted the rising frequency of such offenses and emphasized the need for deterrent punishment to set a precedent for protecting public servants.

In a separate case, a sessions court sentenced two men, Kapil Yadav and Kunal Nakti, to one year in jail for causing hurt to an on-duty policeman in 2017. The officers were attempting to arrest the habitual offenders when they were attacked; Nakti bit an officer on his waist during the altercation. The court convicted them of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 each.

Additionally, a 27-year-old Ghatkopar resident, Krishna Shelar, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for assaulting a traffic police constable on February 14, 2019. Shelar was stopped for riding without a helmet and subsequently abused and assaulted the constable, including pushing a female officer. The court found sufficient evidence to convict Shelar of using criminal force to deter a public servant from duty.

These cases underscore the judiciary’s stance on imposing stringent penalties for assaults on public servants to deter such behavior and uphold the rule of law.
