Tata Garden restoration petition.

Residents of Breach Candy, Mumbai, have launched an online petition advocating for the restoration of the historic Tata Garden, which was demolished to facilitate the Mumbai Coastal Road project. The garden, once a serene 1.06-acre green space, has been fragmented into three sections due to the construction of interchange entry/exit points. The petition, initiated by local resident Rajesh Dahiya, has already garnered over 672 signatures within a day. Signatories are urging the Tata Group to rejuvenate the space, proposing it be renamed “Ratan Tata Garden” in honor of the industrialist’s legacy of humility and public service .

Supporters emphasize Tata Garden’s cultural and emotional significance, recalling its peaceful environment and role as a community landmark. Although the Coastal Road aims to alleviate traffic congestion, locals assert it should not come at the cost of cherished green spaces. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has responded by highlighting plans to develop new public open spaces along the coastal road, stretching from Nepensea Road to Worli. However, residents continue to appeal for preservation and restoration of the original garden to maintain the heritage and environmental value of the location .

In an effort to revive the garden, the Breach Candy Residents Forum (BCRF) has already taken steps by planting 50 coconut tree saplings on World Environment Day. Despite financial constraints, residents are optimistic about restoring the garden with community support and sponsorship .
