The Supreme Court (bench of Justices Mehta & Varale and Justices Bhuyan & Manmohan) strongly rebuked both the Madras High Court and Tamil Nadu government over the handling of ADGP H. M. Jayaram in a kidnapping investigation:

• The High Court had directed Jayaram’s arrest for allegedly aiding in the abduction of a teenager—an order the SC called “shocking” and “very demoralising” for senior police officers.
• Meanwhile, the state government suspended Jayaram on June 17, just after his brief arrest—even though he had voluntarily joined the probe and was released the same day.
• The Supreme Court questioned the abrupt suspension without due process, noting, “He’s a senior police officer—where’s the question of suspending him?” and asked the government to explain or reconsider the decision by Thursday.

These developments underscore the apex court’s concern over preserving due process and preventing undue institutional pressure on senior law enforcement officials.
