Supreme Court Slams UP Govt Over Illegal Demolitions, Says ‘Rule of Law Has Broken Down

The Supreme Court has recently criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and the Prayagraj Development Authority for conducting “inhuman and illegal” demolitions of houses in Prayagraj without adhering to due process. The Court emphasized that such actions violate the rule of law and cannot be condoned. Justice Abhay S. Oka remarked that the manner in which the demolitions were carried out “shocks our conscience.”

In response to these unlawful demolitions, the Supreme Court ordered the Prayagraj Development Authority to pay ₹10 lakh in compensation to each of the affected homeowners within six weeks. The Court underscored the importance of upholding citizens’ rights and ensuring that administrative actions comply with legal procedures.

This ruling serves as a reminder that the rule of law must be maintained, and governmental authorities are expected to act within the bounds of legality and fairness.
