On May 2, 2025, the Supreme Court of India disposed of a Special Leave Petition filed in 2017 by Nisar Ahmed Haji Sayed Bilal, the father of one of the victims of the 2008 Malegaon blast. The petition challenged the Bombay High Court’s decision to grant bail to BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur. The Supreme Court noted that the trial in the Malegaon blast case has concluded, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has reserved its judgment, making the plea for cancellation of bail redundant .
The 2008 Malegaon blast occurred on September 29, resulting in the deaths of six people and injuring over 100. The NIA court concluded the trial on April 19, 2025, after examining 323 prosecution witnesses, with 34 turning hostile. The verdict is scheduled to be delivered on May 8, 2025 .
Pragya Singh Thakur, along with six others, is facing trial under various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Although the NIA had given her a clean chit in a supplementary chargesheet filed in 2016, the court rejected her discharge plea, and she stood trial along with the other accused .
The Supreme Court’s decision to dispose of the plea against Thakur’s bail comes in light of the imminent verdict in the case, rendering the petition for cancellation of bail moot.
