Supreme court order paved way for anganwadi workers pension .

As of April 5, 2025, there is no new Supreme Court order regarding pensions for Anganwadi workers. However, a significant development occurred on April 25, 2022, when the Supreme Court ruled that Anganwadi workers and helpers are entitled to gratuity under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. This landmark judgment recognized the vital role these workers play in implementing government schemes and acknowledged their right to social security benefits.Verdictum+9

The Court observed that Anganwadi centers have become an extended arm of the government, performing statutory duties under the National Food Security Act, 2013. Consequently, it directed both central and state governments to explore modalities for providing better service conditions to Anganwadi workers and helpers.

Following this judgment, various organizations have urged the government to implement the Court’s directives, emphasizing the need for improved service conditions, including considerations for pensions. However, as of today, no specific Supreme Court order has been issued regarding the provision of pensions to Anganwadi workers.
