President’s Rule West Bengal news April 2025.

On April 22, 2025, the Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the imposition of President’s Rule in West Bengal. The petition, filed by social worker Devdutta Maji and advocate Mani Munjal, cites recent communal violence in Murshidabad, allegedly linked to protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, as the basis for their request.

During preliminary discussions, Justice B.R. Gavai, who is set to become the Chief Justice next month, expressed caution regarding the judiciary’s role in such matters. He remarked, “You want us to issue a writ of mandamus to the President to impose this? As it is, we are facing allegations of encroaching into the executive domain.” This reflects the Court’s awareness of recent criticisms suggesting judicial overreach, especially following its directive setting a three-month timeline for the President to act on bills referred by governors.

The West Bengal government has dismissed the allegations presented in the PIL as “a bundle of reckless allegations” aimed at inciting communal tensions. The Supreme Court has not issued any immediate directives regarding the imposition of President’s Rule but has agreed to hear the matter further.
