Political Patronage in Judiciary.

Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) N.V. Ramana has expressed concern that if judges are not adequately shielded from external pressures, they may be compelled to seek political patronage. He emphasized the moral duty of the CJI and Supreme Court judges to support their colleagues, ensuring that all judges feel secure and protected in their roles. This statement was made during the release of Justice Ramana’s book, where CJI-designate B.R. Gavai also pledged to follow his guidance and uphold the judiciary’s independence .
This sentiment aligns with concerns raised by 21 retired judges, including former Supreme Court justices, who wrote to CJI D.Y. Chandrachud. They warned that certain factions, motivated by narrow political interests, are attempting to undermine the judiciary through misinformation and public disparagement. The retired judges urged the judiciary to fortify against such pressures to preserve its sanctity and autonomy .
In a related context, former CJI Ranjan Gogoi has previously highlighted the risks of judges being influenced by external pressures. He noted that if judges decide cases based on fear of criticism from influential groups, they are not remaining true to their oath. Justice Gogoi emphasized the importance of judicial independence and the need for judges to make decisions based on their conscience, without succumbing to external influences .
