As of May 8, 2025, the situation in Pahalgam, Kashmir, remains tense following the deadly terrorist attack on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 Indian tourists. In response, India launched “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, executing 24 precision missile strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), including locations in Muridke and Bahawalpur, known strongholds of groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. The strikes reportedly killed 26 individuals and injured 46 .
Pakistan condemned the strikes as acts of war and authorized “corresponding actions,” leading to heavy artillery shelling along the Line of Control (LoC), resulting in casualties on both sides . International bodies, including the United Nations, have called for restraint and dialogue amid escalating tensions.
Domestically, the Indian government has intensified security measures, conducting mock drills and detaining over 2,000 individuals under anti-terrorism laws. Critics argue that these actions may exacerbate local grievances and alienate the Kashmiri population .
The families of the victims have expressed support for India’s military response, with some urging the government to continue its efforts until terrorism is eradicated .
