Not paying fines can get driving licence Suspended Draft rules!

The Indian government has proposed new draft rules aiming to enhance the enforcement of traffic regulations by linking unpaid traffic fines (e-challans) to driving license suspensions and increased insurance premiums.

Key provisions of the draft rules include:

  • License Suspension for Unpaid Fines: Drivers who fail to pay their traffic e-challans within three months may face suspension of their driving licenses. Additionally, accumulating three or more violations, such as jumping red lights or engaging in dangerous driving within a financial year, could result in a license suspension of at least three months.
  • Increased Insurance Premiums: The government proposes linking unpaid e-challans to vehicle insurance policies. Drivers with two or more pending challans from the previous financial year may be required to pay higher insurance premiums in the subsequent year.

These measures aim to address the low recovery rates of traffic fines, as reports indicate that only about 40% of e-challan amounts are collected across various states.

The draft rules also align with the Supreme Court’s directives to states and Union Territories to implement electronic monitoring systems, such as speed cameras and automatic number plate recognition, to ensure better compliance with traffic laws.

These proposed changes are part of the government’s broader efforts to improve road safety and enforce traffic regulations more effectively.
