A special CBI court in Mumbai granted bail today (June 13, 2025) to Charan Pratap Singh, the Deputy Registrar of the NCLT (Mumbai bench). He was arrested by the CBI on May 29 following allegations of demanding and accepting a ₹3 lakh bribe to influence proceedings in a long-standing hotel ownership dispute.
Singh has been released on bail after furnishing a ₹1 lakh surety bond and personal undertaking. He must appear twice weekly at the CBI office until the chargesheet is filed.
The court imposed further conditions:
- No tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses
- He must remain within Mumbai and Thane districts unless permitted otherwise
- Contact details for two local relatives must be provided.
In his bail plea, Singh highlighted that only ₹22,000 cash was recovered during searches, and asserted he has no property in Mumbai—living in a modest shared chawl instead.
Initial arrest (May 29): The CBI apprehended Singh and his aide, Karsan Ahir, during what they allege was a bribe handover for favoring one party in a brother‐dispute over a hotel in Lonavala. Ahir was caught red-handed; Singh was arrested shortly after.
Custody proceedings:
- On June 4–5, the CBI sought additional custody based on new witness statements suggesting Singh was part of a wider corruption network and that senior NCLT officials could be involved. The court granted one-day remand on June 9 for further investigation.
