Menlo Park, November 11, Tuesday, 2025

IMeta Platforms Inc. has launched new parental control features for AI–teen interactions across its major apps, including Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The update strengthens online safety and gives parents more visibility into how their teens use Meta’s AI chat and creative tools.
This move comes as global regulators and parents raise concerns about how AI chatbots influence teen behavior, privacy, and mental health. Meta’s latest release focuses on combining innovation with responsibility.
Safer AI for Teen Users
The new parental controls are part of Meta’s Responsible AI and Teen Safety Initiative. The company says these tools are designed to inform parents without invading teen privacy.
Parents can now:
- View summaries of AI chat activity.
- Get alerts for flagged or sensitive prompts.
- Restrict access to AI image or text generation.
- See the most-used topics and chat frequency.
Meta’s Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis said, “Our goal is to give parents control while encouraging teens to explore AI responsibly. We want AI to be a tool for creativity, not risk.”
How to Enable Parental Controls for AI–Teen Interactions
Meta has added an easy setup inside its Family Center. Here’s how parents can enable and manage these controls:
Step 1: Open Family Center
- Go to Settings → Family Center on Facebook, Instagram, or Messenger.
- Tap on Supervision under the “Privacy and Safety” menu.
Step 2: Link Your Teen’s Account
- Choose Add Supervision and send an invite to your teen’s profile.
- The teen must accept the invitation before you can monitor AI use.
Step 3: Enable AI Monitoring
- Toggle on Monitor AI Interactions in the dashboard.
- Select what you want to track: AI chats, image generation, or prompt history.
Step 4: Set Permissions and Alerts
- Restrict specific AI features or limit conversation times.
- Enable Sensitive Content Alerts to get notifications for flagged content.
Step 5: Review and Adjust
- Check weekly summaries of AI activity.
- Adjust supervision levels anytime through the Family Center.
Meta says the feature is live in India, the U.S., the U.K., and Canada, and will roll out globally by early 2026.
AI with Built-in Safeguards
The company has upgraded its AI filters and real-time detection systems to block inappropriate or manipulative content. The new design also alerts users before they enter risky conversations or submit harmful prompts.
Meta says its AI moderation algorithms now identify attempts to bypass content restrictions, ensuring that teen interactions remain safe and compliant with child protection standards.
Aligned with Global Safety Standards
The update aligns with international safety frameworks, including OECD AI Principles, UNICEF guidelines, and FTC recommendations.
Meta’s Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said, “Parents and teens both need control and clarity in how AI works. These updates make AI use transparent and accountable.”
Experts and Parents React
Cyber experts have praised Meta’s update as a balanced mix of safety and privacy.
“Meta’s new parental controls are a benchmark for responsible AI,” said Dr. Priya Menon, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Internet Governance.
Parent groups also welcomed the transparency features, calling them “a long-overdue step toward ethical AI design.”
Educating Families on AI Use
Meta will soon introduce AI education modules in Family Center. These will teach both parents and teens how AI systems work and how to report unsafe interactions.
Future updates will add usage reports, school-linked accounts, and custom teen safety levels — part of Meta’s ongoing effort to make AI interaction safe, transparent, and educational.
Responsible AI for the Next Generation
With this update, Meta aims to lead the industry in AI safety and digital parenting. By combining family oversight, AI transparency, and education, the company is building a foundation for safe, responsible AI experiences for young users worldwide.
