Maharashtra Kumbh Mela authority powers.

The state government has introduced a bill to grant the Nashik‑Trimbakeshwar Kumbh Mela Authority sweeping powers ahead of the Simhastha Mela, scheduled for October 2026–July 2027. The legislation empowers the 22‑member authority—headed by the Nashik Divisional Commissioner—to approve all development during the mela, including temporary townships, huts, tents, roads, amenities, and infrastructure. These approvals will override existing urban planning laws and remain valid for up to two years. Importantly, no court can challenge the authority’s decisions. Additionally, the authority gains the power to impose fees and levies, prosecute those obstructing its officials (with penalties of up to one year in prison or fines), and manage its operations under the oversight of a ministers’ committee. All funds collected will be funneled into a dedicated “Kumbh Mela Fund.”

This marks the replacement of a June ordinance and mirrors similar structures seen in Prayagraj, aiming to streamline administration and crowd management during one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.
