HDFC Bank’s MD & CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking to quash an FIR lodged against him by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (which runs Lilavati Hospital). The complaint claims Jagdishan accepted ₹2.05 crore as a bribe from the Chetan Mehta group to sway the Trust’s affairs and secure their control. Charges include cheating (IPC 420) and criminal breach of trust (IPC 409).

Jagdishan maintains the FIR is “malicious, baseless” and a retaliatory tactic linked to the bank’s efforts to recover ₹65.22 crore in dues from Splendour Gems Ltd—a company owned by the Mehta family. His lawyers argued it aims to derail HDFC Bank’s recovery proceedings.

Following a magistrate’s order on May 29, the Bandra police registered the FIR on May 31. The case came before a bench of Justices Gadkari and Patil; both recused themselves. The bench of Justices Kotwal and Chandak also recused, and now a fresh bench will be assigned.

agdishan is seeking to nullify the FIR, asserting it’s a tactic to prevent HDFC Bank from recovering longstanding dues. The High Court will hear the plea once a new bench is constituted.
