Lawyers aligned with political parties.
News INDIA TODAY
As of May 7, 2025, there are no reports of significant incidents involving lawyers aligned with political parties causing disruptions in Indian high courts. However, there have been notable developments in the past year that highlight the intersection of law and politics in India’s judiciary:
In March 2025, the Bombay High Court reprimanded lawyers for the casual filing of election petitions following the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Maharashtra. Justice Milind Jadhav observed that many advocates lacked knowledge about the necessary parties to include in such petitions, leading to improper filings. The court emphasized the importance of adhering to legal provisions and Supreme Court rulings, urging lawyers to exercise due diligence in election-related cases.
In April 2024, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud addressed concerns over lawyers commenting on pending cases and judgments. He urged legal professionals to prioritize their allegiance to the court and the Indian Constitution over political beliefs. CJI Chandrachud expressed being “very disturbed” by the trend of lawyers engaging in public discourse about ongoing legal matters, emphasizing the need for the legal community to uphold the dignity and integrity of the judiciary.
In March 2024, over 600 lawyers from across India submitted a letter to the Chief Justice of India, expressing concerns about attempts by “vested interest groups” to influence judicial outcomes, particularly in cases involving political leaders. The lawyers highlighted tactics such as selective criticism or praise of court decisions based on political agendas and efforts to discredit current judicial proceedings. They urged the Supreme Court to take steps to protect the judiciary from such pressures.
These instances underscore the ongoing challenges at the intersection of law and politics in India, reflecting the need for vigilance and integrity within the legal profession.
