lawyer assaulted in Gurugram police station.

On June 6, 2025, the Supreme Court of India issued a notice to the Haryana government, including the state police and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Gurugram’s Sector 50 police station, in response to a plea filed by a woman advocate. The advocate alleges that she was raped, sexually assaulted, and beaten by police officials when she visited the police station with her client in connection with a matrimonial case.

A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih directed the Haryana authorities to respond to the petition within four weeks. The advocate, represented by Senior Advocate Priya Hingorani, has requested an independent investigation, preferably by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), and the transfer of the case outside Gurugram due to concerns over impartiality.

The incident allegedly occurred on May 21, 2025. A Zero FIR was initially registered at Delhi’s Subzi Mandi Police Station on May 22, naming the SHO of Sector 50, Gurugram. However, the case was subsequently transferred to the same Gurugram police station where the accused officials are posted.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the rationale behind the petitioner visiting the police station and expressed concerns over the behavior of the police officers involved. The Court emphasized that the investigation should not be conducted by the same officials accused in the complaint.

The advocate has also sought police protection and disciplinary action against the concerned Gurugram police officers.

This case has garnered significant attention, highlighting serious concerns about police conduct and the treatment of legal professionals. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the importance of an impartial investigation to ensure justice.
