Justice Surya Kant Leads Legal Aid Campaign to Assist Prisoners in Approaching Supreme Court.

On April 1, 2025, Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), conducted a virtual meeting with the Chairpersons of State Legal Services Authorities (SLSAs) and High Court Legal Services Committees (HCLSCs) across India. This meeting was a follow-up to a legal aid campaign initiated in January 2025 aimed at identifying prisoners requiring legal assistance to file appeals or Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) before the Supreme Court.

During the campaign, over 4,200 prisoners in need of legal aid were identified. Justice Surya Kant emphasized the importance of promptly providing necessary documents, including certified copies of judgments, to the SCLSC to facilitate the timely filing of appeals or SLPs. He also advocated for regular campaigns by SLSAs and HCLSCs to continually identify and assist inmates requiring legal aid, ensuring that prisoners are informed about their right to legal services upon entering prison.

Justice Surya Kant’s leadership in this initiative underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the constitutional mandate of providing free legal aid to marginalized and underprivileged sections of society.
