On May 16, 2025, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai publicly criticized the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for its decision not to hold a farewell for Justice Bela M. Trivedi, who chose this day as her last working day ahead of her official retirement on June 9, 2025. Presiding over a ceremonial bench in her honor, CJI Gavai expressed his disapproval, stating, “I believe in speaking straightly, the Association ought not to have taken such a stand.” He acknowledged the presence of SCBA President Kapil Sibal and Vice President Rachna Srivastava, commending them for attending despite the association’s stance. CJI Gavai emphasized that the full courtroom attendance reflected Justice Trivedi’s esteemed position as a judge, irrespective of any differences with the bar. He praised her for her integrity, fairness, and hard work, wishing her well on her future endeavors. Justice Augustine George Masih also supported the view that traditional practices should be upheld. Justice Trivedi, in her response, expressed satisfaction in having always acted according to her conscience and highlighted the importance of institutional unity in the judiciary. Her tenure was marked by a commitment to justice and an unwavering adherence to the law.
