Jain temple demolition controversy.

On April 19, 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished the 90-year-old Digambar Jain Temple in Vile Parle, Mumbai, triggering significant backlash from the Jain community. The demolition occurred despite a pending court case and an oral stay order, leading to accusations that the BMC violated legal procedures and disrespected religious sentiments .

The Jain temple trust has cited a 2013 legal opinion from the BMC’s Law Department, which reportedly advised against demolishing the temple. This document is now central to the community’s legal challenge, alleging that the BMC ignored its own legal counsel and acted unilaterally .

In response, Jain organizations have organized protests and called for a high-level inquiry. Madhya Pradesh BJP leader Deepak Jain ‘Tinu’ has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Governor, demanding swift action and accountability .

The incident has intensified concerns over the protection of religious structures in Mumbai, especially those with historical and cultural significance. The Jain community is now seeking legal remedies to restore the temple and prevent similar actions in the future.
