​India has closed its main land border crossing with Pakistan at the Wagah-Attari checkpoint following a deadly militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 23, 2025. The attack resulted in the deaths of 26 people, including 25 Indian tourists and one Nepalese citizen, and injured 17 others. A previously unknown group, Kashmir Resistance, claimed responsibility for the attack, which Indian authorities believe is linked to Pakistan-based organizations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen

In response, India has taken several measures:​

• Closed the Wagah-Attari border crossing, the only road link between the two countries, effective immediately. Pakistani nationals are barred from entering India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, and existing visas have been canceled .
• Suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a water-sharing agreement established in 1960, until Pakistan ceases support for cross-border terrorism .
• Expelled Pakistani military advisors from its High Commission in New Delhi and recalled its own military advisors from Islamabad .​

These actions have significantly escalated tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with Pakistan denying involvement in the attack and warning of a comprehensive response.​
