IIT Bombay land encroachment.
News THE TIMES OF INDIA, loksatta
As of May 9, 2025, the Bombay High Court has directed the Mumbai Suburban District Collector to conduct a survey to determine whether land belonging to IIT Bombay in Powai has been encroached upon. This order follows a public interest litigation (PIL) alleging illegal construction on the land near Chand Shah Wali Dargah along Niti Marg. The court has set a deadline of three months for the completion of this survey. If encroachments are confirmed, the Collector is instructed to take legal action to remove the unauthorized structures.
The PIL claims that individuals have illegally constructed structures on vacant land intended for student recreation. Despite multiple complaints to local authorities, no significant action was taken, prompting the filing of the PIL. The court has mandated a joint survey involving IIT Bombay officials and the concerned parties to verify the claims. Additionally, the court has assured that police assistance will be provided if any encroachments are found.
This development underscores the judiciary’s proactive stance on protecting institutional land from unauthorized occupation and ensuring that such matters are addressed promptly.
