​Recent data obtained through Right to Information (RTI) applications has highlighted a concerning trend in the handling of cyber financial fraud cases in India. Over a four-year period, approximately 38,000 cyber fraud cases were reported, involving losses totaling around ₹497 crore. However, the conviction rate remains alarmingly low, with only two convictions recorded during this period.

This disparity between the number of reported cases and the number of convictions underscores significant challenges in the legal and investigative processes related to cybercrime. Factors contributing to this issue include jurisdictional complexities, lack of technical expertise among law enforcement, and resource constraints. Additionally, many cases are often settled through compromises between the complainants and the accused, further complicating the pursuit of justice.

Experts advocate for the establishment of specialized cyber courts and the recruitment of trained personnel to address these challenges effectively. Such measures are deemed essential to enhance the efficiency of investigations and to ensure that perpetrators of cyber financial fraud are held accountable.
