The controversy surrounding Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma has escalated following the submission of a report by a Supreme Court-appointed three-judge panel. The panel’s findings, submitted to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on May 4, confirm the discovery of a substantial cash stash at Justice Varma’s residence during a fire incident on March 14. This revelation contradicts Justice Varma’s previous denials and claims of a conspiracy .
In response to these findings, CJI Khanna has requested Justice Varma’s explanation within 48 hours. The three-member panel, comprising Chief Justices Sheel Nagu (Punjab and Haryana High Court), G.S. Sandhawalia (Himachal Pradesh High Court), and Justice Anu Sivaraman (Karnataka High Court), conducted a thorough inquiry, including site inspections and interviews with relevant personnel .
The incident has led to significant repercussions. Following the fire and subsequent discovery, Justice Varma was transferred back to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court, and has been relieved of judicial duties pending further investigation . The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has expressed concerns over the transfer, questioning the implications for the court’s reputation .
The Supreme Court has also made public a video and photographs depicting the burnt cash found at Justice Varma’s residence, intensifying public scrutiny . As the situation develops, the legal community and the public await Justice Varma’s response and any subsequent actions by the judiciary.
