CJI Orders Inquiry into Justice Yashwant Varma’s Cash Stash Controversy, No Confirmation on FIR Listing Yet

As of now, there are no reports indicating that Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna has assured the listing of petitions seeking a First Information Report (FIR) against Justice Yashwant Varma concerning the recent cash stash controversy. However, the CJI has taken significant steps to address the situation.

On March 22, 2025, CJI Khanna constituted a three-member committee to conduct an in-house inquiry into the allegations against Justice Varma. The committee comprises Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court; Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court; and Justice Anu Sivaraman of the Karnataka High Court. During the inquiry, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court has been directed not to assign any judicial work to Justice Varma.

The controversy arose following a fire at Justice Varma’s official residence on March 14, during which firefighters reportedly discovered a substantial amount of unaccounted cash. In response, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his transfer to the Allahabad High Court.

While these measures indicate the judiciary’s commitment to addressing the allegations, there is currently no information regarding the listing of petitions for an FIR against Justice Varma. The situation is evolving, and it is advisable to follow updates from reliable news sources for the latest developments.
