Chief Justice of India BR Gavai.

Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai affirmed that the Supreme Court remains a collective institution governed by its judges, not just the office of the CJI. Speaking at a felicitation event in Nagpur on June 28–29, he emphasized that administrative decisions are made by the full court, citing measures such as convening full-court meetings and reversing structural changes—like removing corridor glass panels—not as unilateral acts but as decisions taken by all the judges together . CJI Gavai paid tribute to his predecessors, Justices U. U. Lalit and Sanjiv Khanna, noting that all of them have actively worked to dispel the perception of the Supreme Court being “the CJI’s court.” He also cautioned that while judicial activism plays a vital role when legislative or executive branches falter, it must never slip into overreach—no “judicial terrorism or adventurism” . He underscored his adherence to transparency, collegiality, and institutional integrity—principles championed throughout his short tenure since being sworn in on May 14, 2025 .
