The Central Government has recently notified the appointment of three additional judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court as permanent judges. Justices Sumeet Goel, Sudeepti Sharma, and Kirti Singh, who were appointed as additional judges on November 2, 2023, have now been elevated to permanent positions.

This development follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation during its meeting on March 19, 2025. The Collegium, after assessing their performance and suitability, approved their elevation to strengthen the judiciary’s capacity in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Previously, on September 27, 2023, the Centre had notified the appointment of 11 additional judges as permanent judges in the same High Court. These judges had been serving as additional judges since August 16, 2022, and their elevation was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on September 14, 2023.

With these appointments, the Punjab and Haryana High Court moves closer to its sanctioned strength of 85 judges, aiming to enhance its efficiency in handling cases. As of September 1, 2023, the court was functioning with 58 judges.

The process of appointing permanent judges involves rigorous evaluation by the Supreme Court Collegium, which considers factors such as merit, integrity, and performance. This ensures that only the most competent individuals are entrusted with the responsibility of upholding justice.

These appointments are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the judiciary and reduce the backlog of cases, thereby improving the delivery of justice in the region.
