Calcutta High Court Lawyers Protest Transfer of Delhi Judge, Boycott Proceedings.

Lawyers at the Calcutta High Court are actively protesting the transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from the Delhi High Court to their bench. The Supreme Court Collegium recommended this transfer on March 27, 2025, and it was formalized by a central government notification on April 1, 2025.

In response, the three main lawyers’ associations—the Bar Association, the Bar Library Club, and the Incorporated Law Society—have expressed strong opposition. They argue that the Calcutta High Court should not become a “dumping ground for judges with questionable image or short stints,” referencing alleged improprieties associated with Justice Sharma.

As a form of protest, these associations have boycotted court proceedings and announced plans to abstain from Justice Sharma’s swearing-in ceremony. They have also communicated their concerns to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, urging a reconsideration of the transfer decision.

This situation underscores ongoing tensions between the judiciary’s administrative decisions and the legal community’s expectations regarding judicial appointments and transfers.
