Mumbai, Wednesday, August 6, 2025:
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has booked Abdul Kadar Ali Mohamed. He is an alleged associate of the late underworld figure Iqbal Mirchi. The case involves the illegal demolition of New Roshan Talkies in Mumbai’s Girgaon area.
Police at the VP Road station filed the complaint on Tuesday. It accuses Abdul of unlawfully razing the historic cinema structure. He also allegedly tried to sell the vacant plot for ₹15 crore.
According to ED sources, Abdul had transferred the plot’s ownership during the Covid-19 pandemic. The property is located in a prime area of South Mumbai. He allegedly used forged documents and took advantage of restrictions during lockdown to discreetly demolish the building. An FIR reveals that Mirchi’s family had warned Abdul not to interfere with the property. However, he went ahead anyway.
The complaint states that Mirchi and Abdul had known each other since 1982. A mutual friend, Mumtaz Rehman, introduced them. The two allegedly agreed to buy the property together. They contributed ₹8.5 lakh in total, with Abdul paying ₹5.41 lakh. The ED has cited this transaction as the basis for Abdul’s subsequent attempts to sell or redevelop the plot independently.
Mirchi’s son, who now lives abroad, has since filed a legal petition contesting the demolition. Moreover, he claims Abdul carried out the demolition without permission and misused the ownership documents. As a result, the ED believes this act is part of a larger money laundering pattern. Furthermore, it involves illegal asset transfers linked to Mirchi’s legacy.
This development is part of an ongoing probe into Mirchi’s properties. The ED seized many of the properties in 2019. These included several prime real estate assets in Mumbai worth about ₹579 crore. Officials suspect the properties are proceeds of crime. Authorities have flagged the New Roshan Talkies plot—once a landmark in the area—as one of the key assets.
The ED’s legal complaint adds further weight to its continuing crackdown on assets tied to Mirchi and his network. Abdul may face charges under multiple sections related to property fraud, money laundering, and illegal demolition.
