The Maharashtra government clears new police appointments to manage security at the upcoming international airport

Mumbai, July 25, 2025 The Maharashtra government has sanctioned 285 new police posts for the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. These officers will manage immigration and security systems. A government resolution (GR) issued on Thursday confirmed the move. The personnel will work under the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner. He will also oversee the setup of the police system at the new facility.

The state has allocated around ₹11 crore for this purpose. The funds will go towards creating and implementing the new posts. This shows the government’s focus on boosting law enforcement infrastructure. The initiative comes ahead of the airport’s phase 1 inauguration, expected in the coming months.

The airport will feature major infrastructure upgrades. These include four passenger terminals, two runways, and a cargo terminal. Additional civil aviation facilities will also be part of the project.es. These installations are expected to significantly boost connectivity, traffic flow, and economic activity in the region.

The newly approved police posts will play a key role in maintaining law and order across the airport premises. The Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner will implement the security framework, as the airport will fall under Panvel’s jurisdiction.

In parallel, the government has also taken administrative measures to improve efficiency across police zones. A day before approving the 285 police posts, the Maharashtra government restructured the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate. The move included appointing an additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP). Authorities also created a new police zone by splitting the existing Panvel and Vashi zones into two — Panvel and Vashi-Panvel zones.

Officials say the police restructuring aims to boost focus and accountability in fast-growing areas impacted by the airport project. As passenger numbers, commercial activity, and infrastructure demands rise, law enforcement will take on a more active role in handling security and regulatory duties.

Officials describe the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport as a game-changer for regional connectivity. It is expected to handle high passenger volumes and ease pressure on the congested Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. Authorities estimate the airport will initially handle over 10 million passengers annually, with scope for expansion in subsequent phases.

By deploying a comprehensive police force in advance, the government aims to ensure a seamless and secure operational launch. The decision also reflects broader state-level priorities on improving public safety infrastructure in tandem with large-scale urban projects.

As the inauguration approaches, civil, aviation, and police authorities must work closely to ensure the smooth launch of Navi Mumbai International Airport, a key addition to India’s aviation network.
