The Italian company was found using similar designs and marketing them without proper attribution or licensing. The matter was taken up by Indian officials and craft advocates, who cited the GI (Geographical Indication) protection granted to Kolhapuri chappals. As a result, action has been initiated to prevent misuse of the name and design internationally, giving a morale boost to local artisans and reinforcing the global identity of this heritage footwear.
