Hyderabad chemical plant blast.

A catastrophic blast and ensuing fire ripped through Sigachi Industries’ chemical/pharma plant in Pashamylaram village, Medak (near Hyderabad), on Monday morning, July 1, 2025. The facility’s spray/dryer unit exploded, collapsing a multi‑storey building and trapping many workers .

Authorities confirm at least 36 people have died, with around 34 injured, including 12 in critical condition, and rescue efforts continue under debris. An initial report noted 15 dead and 35 injured, but tolls have since been revised upward . Many victims are severely burned, requiring DNA testing for identification .

Over 140 workers were present; the explosion stemmed from a suspected malfunction in the dryer unit, causing pressure buildup and ignition of fine chemical dust particles . The plant exclusively manufactures microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) for pharmaceuticals, foods, and cosmetics; this facility accounts for more than 25% of the company’s output .

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has formed a five-member committee to investigate the cause and prevent future tragedies . Affected plant operations have been halted for 90 days while debris removal and rescue missions continue into Tuesday night . Compensation is being arranged: PM Modi announced ₹200,000 for next of kin and ₹50,000 for the injured, with additional aid from Bihar’s CM for workers from their state .

The state government has also demanded an action plan from Sigachi’s management, which has drawn sharp criticism for their delayed response at the site .
