The Supreme Court of India has intervened in a serious case involving the alleged assault of journalists by Madhya Pradesh police. The incident reportedly occurred inside the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bhind district, following the journalists’ reporting on illegal sand mining activities in the Chambal River region. The journalists allege that they were physically assaulted, subjected to caste-based abuse, and threatened with harm. They have also claimed that their lives are in danger, prompting them to seek refuge in Delhi .
In response to a petition filed by the journalists, the Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma, questioned why the journalists had not approached the Madhya Pradesh High Court first. The petitioners’ counsel explained that they had not received relief at the local level and feared for their safety, leading them to directly approach the Supreme Court. The bench remarked, “You know the conclusion if it comes before this bench,” indicating a serious consideration of the matter .
The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Bhind SP, directing that he be made a party to the proceedings. The court has also called for a detailed response from the Madhya Pradesh government regarding the allegations. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on June 6, 2025.
This case has drawn significant attention from various media organizations and press bodies, highlighting concerns over press freedom and the safety of journalists in India.
