An FIR has been filed against Eagle Infra India, the contractor awarded a ₹470 crore contract for a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Vasai East, for allegedly stealing electricity worth ₹3,670. The theft was discovered in early May when an activist noticed unauthorized power usage from a mini feeder used for digging a sewer line in Sanyukt Nagar, Nalasopara East. Upon investigation by Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) officials, the company was issued a bill for the stolen electricity, which they subsequently paid. The Achole police station registered the FIR on May 27, 2025.
Activists, including Congress leader Kuldeep Vartak, have called for the immediate cancellation of Eagle Infra India’s contract and its blacklisting from future civic projects due to this criminal offense. Despite the FIR being filed over a week ago, the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) has not yet taken formal action. Additionally, in March, a worker from the same company died in an accident, raising further concerns about the contractor’s safety practices. Civic chief Anil Kumar Pawar has committed to examining the issue.
This incident highlights the ongoing issue of electricity theft in the Vasai-Virar region. According to reports, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) uncovered over 2,500 cases of electricity theft in the city during the 2024-2025 financial year, amounting to a total loss of approximately ₹10.77 crore. These cases involved various methods of illegal power consumption, including bypassing meters and unauthorized connections.
The case against Eagle Infra India serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in public contracts, especially those involving substantial public funds.
