Final year law student suspension news.
News THE TIMES OF INDIA, THE LEGAL AFFAIR
A final-year law student from Symbiosis Law School, Nagpur, has withdrawn her writ petition challenging her six-month suspension after the Bombay High Court declined to grant interim relief. The suspension was imposed following her alleged association with Rejas Sydeek, a suspected Urban Naxal arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and her social media posts that appeared to challenge the government’s stance on Operation Sindoor.
The university’s disciplinary committee concluded its inquiry on May 22, 2025, and found grounds for disciplinary action, suspending the student from both academic and non-academic activities effective May 10. The student challenged the suspension in the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court, claiming academic prejudice and violation of natural justice. However, the High Court observed the matter as administrative and noted that a statutory appeal had been filed, refusing interim relief and allowing the writ petition to be withdrawn.
The university cited the student’s unsatisfactory explanation for her association with Sydeek and her controversial social media activity as reasons for the suspension. The court emphasized that if the student’s appeal succeeded, she would be permitted to take special examinations.
This case highlights the complex interplay between institutional disciplinary actions, students’ rights, and broader concerns about national security and freedom of expression.
