On May 21, 2025, the Allahabad High Court granted bail to Poonam Sharma (Manav Sharma’s mother-in-law) and one of his sisters-in-law in the ongoing abetment of suicide case. The court observed that the allegations against them were general and lacked specific evidence of abetment. Additionally, both women had no prior criminal history and had been in custody since March 15, 2025. The court noted that they were implicated solely due to their familial relationship with the wife, Nikita Sharma. The bail was granted after considering these factors and the absence of substantial evidence linking them to the alleged crime.
Manav Sharma, a 25-year-old TCS manager from Agra, died by suicide in February 2025, leaving behind a video in which he blamed his wife and in-laws for his distress. His father filed a complaint under Section 108 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita Act, accusing them of abetting the suicide. The police filed a chargesheet incorporating testimonies from 17 witnesses, including Manav’s immediate family. While his wife and father-in-law have been arrested, the court has granted bail to his mother-in-law and sister-in-law, highlighting the need for specific evidence in such cases.
This case has drawn significant attention to issues of marital discord, mental health, and the legal implications of suicide in India.
