On May 12, 2025, the Gujarat High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Ajay Rameshbhai Trivedi, who sought the demolition of alleged illegal constructions near Lajpore Central Jail in Surat. The court imposed an exemplary cost of ₹20 lakh on the petitioner, citing misuse of the PIL mechanism for personal gain.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Pranav Trivedi found that Trivedi’s credentials were highly questionable, noting his involvement in a blackmailing case uncovered through a sting operation. The court emphasized that such unscrupulous individuals should not be allowed to abuse the judicial process.
To prevent future misuse, the court directed that any PILs filed by Trivedi concerning Surat district must undergo scrutiny by the Registrar (Judicial) before being entertained. Trivedi had identified himself as an RTI activist and whistle-blower, alleging that Gita Industries Co-Operative Service Society Ltd had constructed residential buildings in violation of government orders, posing a threat due to their proximity to the central jail.
The court’s decision underscores its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the judicial process and deterring the exploitation of PILs for ulterior motives.
