The Madras High Court has recently emphasized the urgent need to digitize investigative agencies, noting that the IT wing of the Tamil Nadu Police remains in a “premature stage.” The court highlighted that despite the availability of technology, its effective implementation in police investigations is lacking. This observation underscores the necessity for comprehensive digital infrastructure and training within the police force to enhance efficiency and accountability.

This call for modernization aligns with previous concerns raised by the court regarding delays in investigations and the need for timely compliance with court orders. In November 2024, the Director-General of Police assured the court that a circular had been issued to police officials to utilize the High Court Automation Software, aiming for the time-bound implementation of court orders. Additionally, training programs were planned to ensure effective use of this system.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court had previously directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide proper training to police officers on the submission of authenticated electronic evidence, highlighting gaps in the current system.

These developments indicate a growing recognition of the need for technological advancements in policing to ensure effective and transparent investigations.
