The Madras High Court has overturned the discharge of Tamil Nadu Minister Durai Murugan and his family members in a 2002 disproportionate assets case. Justice P. Velmurugan found the earlier decision by the Vellore Special Court to be “perverse” and directed that charges be framed against the accused. The court also mandated that the trial be conducted on a day-to-day basis and concluded within six months .

The case alleges that Durai Murugan amassed assets worth ₹3.92 crore beyond his known sources of income during his tenure as Public Works Minister from 1996 to 2001. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) had filed the case in 2002, but the trial court discharged the accused in 2007. The DVAC filed a revision petition in 2013, challenging the discharge order.​

In its ruling, the Madras High Court criticized the special court’s approach and emphasized the need for vigilance in ensuring that the criminal justice system is not manipulated. The court’s decision underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in public office.
