​The Delhi High Court is currently considering a plea for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into an alleged extortion racket operated by inmates within Tihar Jail. This development follows a petition filed by conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who claims that he was coerced into paying substantial sums to jail officials for protection and privileges during his incarceration.

In response to these allegations, the CBI initiated a preliminary inquiry in April 2024 to investigate the claims of extortion within Tihar and other Delhi prisons. The agency has reported that the investigation is in its early stages, with efforts underway to collect documents and identify witnesses .​

Chandrashekhar alleges that former Delhi Minister Satyendar Jain, while in custody, extorted approximately ₹10 crore from him between 2018 and 2021. Additionally, he claims that former Tihar Jail Superintendent Raj Kumar and other officials were involved in facilitating this extortion racket .​

The Delhi High Court has expressed concern over the seriousness of these allegations and has directed the CBI to conduct a thorough investigation. The court is awaiting updates on the progress of the inquiry and has emphasized the need for accountability within the prison system.
