On April 23, 2025, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) announced a temporary suspension of its protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, in solidarity with the victims of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which occurred on April 22 at the scenic Baisaran meadow in Anantnag district, resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, predominantly tourists, and left several others injured.
In a statement, the AIMPLB condemned the attack as “deeply tragic and strongly condemnable,” emphasizing that terrorism contradicts Islam’s policy of promoting peace. The Board decided to pause its ongoing protests for three days, starting April 23, to honor the victims and express solidarity with their families.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, has been a subject of contention, leading to widespread protests across various regions, including violent incidents in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The AIMPLB’s decision to suspend its campaign reflects a moment of unity and mourning in the face of national tragedy.
Other Muslim organizations, such as the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, also condemned the Pahalgam attack, reiterating that terrorism has no place in Islam and should not be associated with any religion.
The Indian government has responded to the attack with strong measures, including summoning Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires and suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, signaling a firm stance against terrorism.
The AIMPLB has indicated that its protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act will resume after the three-day mourning period.
