MPCB inspection directive.

The Bombay High Court has directed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to conduct a surprise inspection of a ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant in Bhendi Bazaar, South Mumbai, following allegations of noise pollution and operation beyond permitted hours. The court also instructed the Mumbai Police to provide protection to MPCB officials during the inspection.

The petitioner, a local resident, claimed that the RMC plant operates beyond the permissible time limit of 6 am to 6 pm, causing disturbances in the residential area. The plant’s consent to operate was initially valid until March 31, 2025, but it was reportedly extended.

The High Court questioned the MPCB regarding the operational hours of the plant, emphasizing the need for adherence to prescribed time limits. The court’s directive aims to ensure compliance with environmental norms and protect the rights of residents in the vicinity.

This development underscores the importance of regulatory oversight in urban areas where industrial activities intersect with residential zones. The outcome of the MPCB’s inspection will be crucial in determining the plant’s future operations and addressing the concerns raised by the local community.
