As of April 21, 2025, there are no reports of a pan masala brand or any player defying an ‘out’ decision to continue batting in the IPL. However, there are two distinct stories involving pan masala advertising and controversial umpiring decisions:
Pan Masala Advertising Controversy in IPL
The promotion of pan masala products by former cricketers during IPL broadcasts has drawn significant criticism. Gautam Gambhir, former Indian cricketer and current mentor of Lucknow Super Giants, has publicly condemned such endorsements, labeling them as “disgusting and disappointing.” He emphasized the responsibility of sports figures as role models, especially given their influence on youth audiences. Gambhir revealed that he declined a ₹3 crore offer to endorse a pan masala brand, citing ethical concerns. He also praised Sachin Tendulkar for reportedly refusing a ₹20 crore pan masala endorsement, honoring a promise to his father to avoid promoting such products .
In response to the growing concerns, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken action by banning sponsorships from companies associated with tobacco, alcohol, betting, and other controversial sectors. This move aims to uphold the integrity of the sport and protect its younger audience from potentially harmful influences .
Umpiring Controversy: Sanju Samson’s Dismissal
In a separate incident during the 2024 IPL season, Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson was involved in a contentious dismissal. While attempting a catch near the boundary, replays suggested that the fielder might have touched the boundary cushion, which would render the batsman not out. However, the third umpire ruled Samson out, leading to a heated exchange between Samson and the on-field umpires. Despite his protests and signaling for a review, the decision stood, sparking debates about the consistency and accuracy of umpiring decisions in the league .
While there is no direct link between pan masala advertising and players defying ‘out’ decisions in the IPL, both issues highlight ongoing concerns about ethics and decision-making within the league.
