TELANGANA PHONE TAPPING CASE !

Background of the Telangana Phone Tapping Case:

The Telangana phone tapping controversy, often referred to as “Tapgate,” surfaced in 2023. It involved allegations of unauthorized surveillance on political figures, bureaucrats, judges, and journalists during the tenure of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government. The alleged operation was reportedly orchestrated by the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) under the leadership of its former chief, T. Prabhakar Rao. The surveillance was purportedly aimed at influencing the outcome of the 2023 state elections.

Involvement of Media Personnel:

Aruvela Shravan Kumar, the Managing Director of iNews, has been implicated in the case as Accused No. 6. Investigations suggest that Shravan Kumar provided specific instructions on whose phones should be tapped and shared details on raids and other activities. He allegedly visited the SIB office multiple times to direct surveillance operations. Fearing arrest, Shravan Kumar reportedly fled to the United States.

Recent Legal Developments:

  • Bail Granted to Police Officers: In January 2025, the Supreme Court granted bail to suspended police officer M. Thirupathanna, who had spent 10 months in jail following his arrest in connection with the phone tapping case. The Court emphasized that the trial court may impose stringent bail conditions, and any breach could lead to immediate cancellation of bail.
  • High Court’s Directive to Media: In July 2024, the Telangana High Court directed media outlets to refrain from mentioning the names and mobile numbers of judges while reporting on the phone tapping case. This directive aimed to protect the privacy and security of the judiciary amid the ongoing investigations.

Conclusion:

While the Telangana phone tapping case has involved various high-profile individuals, including media personnel, there is no current information confirming that the Supreme Court has granted interim protection to a media outlet’s Managing Director. The case continues to unfold, with legal proceedings ongoing for several accused individuals.
