In a recent development, a special court in Mumbai sentenced Manoj Gaonkar, a 56-year-old former cashier at Vidhan Bhavan, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for amassing assets worth ₹15.95 lakh, which were over 100% disproportionate to his known income between 1991 and 2004. During this period, Gaonkar earned a total of ₹14.75 lakh. His properties included domestic articles valued at ₹1.5 lakh, a flat each at Borivli and Mira Road, and a farmhouse in Talegaon, Pune district. He was also fined ₹50,000.

In a 143-page judgment, Special Judge Shashikant Eknathrao Bangar stated that Gaonkar, as a public servant, held assets disproportionate to his known income during the check period and failed to satisfactorily account for them. He was found guilty of criminal misconduct under the Prevention of Corruption … , along with forgery, cheating, and breach of trust under the Indian Penal Code.

Previously, in 2018, Gaon … ₹63,000 from an M … ₹52.3 lakh from state government funds in 2005. This sentence is currently under appeal.

The court emphasized the severity of corruption and the need for stringent punishment, rejecting any plea for leniency. The judge highlighted the thorough and reliable nature of the investigation, reinforcing the prosecution’s case and supporting the conviction.
