1L pending RTI cases in state activities seek faster remedy .

As of April 1, 2025, Maharashtra’s Right to Information (RTI) Commission faces a significant backlog, with over 100,000 appeals and complaints awaiting resolution. This backlog is primarily due to vacancies among Information Commissioners; currently, only four commissioners oversee all eight state benches. To address this issue, the Maharashtra government has proposed appointing four new information commissioners, including a Chief Information Commissioner, to expedite pending cases.

RTI activists argue that merely filling these positions is insufficient. They advocate for structured, time-bound frameworks to handle the backlog effectively and suggest implementing real-time online tracking of cases to enhance transparency. Additionally, activists recommend making virtual hearings a standard practice, similar to court proceedings, to accelerate the resolution process.

The urgency of these measures is underscored by the fact that many appeals have been pending for over a year, causing significant delays in information access. Activists emphasize that without comprehensive reforms, citizens will continue to face prolonged waiting periods for RTI resolutions.
