18 YEARS ON ,4 COVICTED IN ADULTERATION CASE .

Eighteen years after the initial incident, a Mumbai court has convicted four individuals—Ramlu Guruyayya (65), Yadgiri Gandhashri (63), Yadayya Gattigorla (46), and Suresh Shelar (66)—in a food adulteration case. Presiding over the case, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vinod R Patil sentenced each to rigorous imprisonment and imposed fines of ₹5,000, with an additional month of imprisonment if the fines are not paid. The convictions were based on charges of adulterating food products, which posed significant health risks to consumers.

This case highlights the prolonged legal processes often associated with food adulteration incidents in India. Historically, Mumbai has faced challenges in securing timely convictions in such cases. For instance, between 2009 and 2011, despite numerous prosecutions for food adulteration, the city recorded zero convictions, underscoring systemic issues within the judicial process.

In more recent developments, authorities have intensified efforts to combat food adulteration. Notably, in October 2024, a joint operation by Mumbai Police and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) led to the seizure of adulterated sweets worth over ₹31 lakh from a production unit in Borivali East. The owner was arrested for using decayed cashews and other substandard ingredients.

Additionally, in May 2022, two individuals were arrested in Sewree for allegedly adulterating tea with harmful scented chemicals. The police seized 430 kg of adulterated tea during the operation.

These incidents reflect ongoing challenges in ensuring food safety and the necessity for stringent enforcement of food safety regulations to protect public health.
